Description
When It Dances is a performance collaboration between dancer/choreographer Kyuja Bae and composer/sound artist Simen Korsmo Robertsen. It is an interdisciplinary performance questioning spiritual qualities in everyday actions. Through interwoven connection between sound and movement actions the artists search for both the poetry in practical tasks and their possible opposites: what is contained in the non-spiritual?
When It Dances is aimed to raise questions around and reveal nuances of spirituality and its place in our everyday life today. The practice and artistic research is based in both traditional spiritual practices – as zen buddhism and taoism – and a postmodern, contemporary reality. Where do we find spirituality today and what does it contain?
Kyuja Bae is interdisciplinary artist based in Norway, born and raised in South Korea. She works in the fields of art such as choreography, dance, performance art, theater, writing and installation.
She has a holistic approach to dance, seeing the dance as a poetic creative sacred ritual of life. Dance is a path for spiritual practice. Her recent artistic research concerns Meditative Body, combining dance with meditation to understand the flow of energy in us and around us and how to respond to the different forces that rise simultaneously from both inside and outside in a state of awareness. For many years, she has been practicing Butoh dance, contact impro, yoga, meditation and energy reading & healing.
She holds an MA degree in choreography from Oslo National Academy of the Arts (Kunsthøyskolen i Oslo). She studied theater/acting/stage art/creative writing in various institutions such as Nordic Black Express in Oslo and Norwegian Theater Academy in Fredrikstad and at Korean National University of Arts, Seoul, Korea. Kyuja Bae is artistic director of Kyuja Bae Company. She is choreographer & artist of Eye of Tree. And she is a member of PAO (Performance Art in Oslo), Assitej Norge and artist & co-organizer of Butoh-Laboratorium in Oslo.

Simen Korsmo Robertsen is a Norwegian sound artist, composer and choreographer.
His artistic works reflect a sensitivity and interest toward the close bond between sound art, music and movement.
“I consider my current works as explorations of the surprisingly powerful beauty of imperfection, the humble and incomplete. In this performance there are quite fragile soundscapes, sometimes on the border to nothingness but that still contains space for something else. Even a quiet sound that does not shout can stay generous enough to invite everyone in if they are willing to listen.”
Korsmo Robertsen is a member of the Norwegian Composer Association. He is awarded various artist grands and is working both internationally and locally around his base in Drammen, Norway. His interdisciplinary ambition is well supported by his education, as he holds academy degrees in both jazz piano and music pedagogics and choreography from Norwegian Academy of Music (ba) and Oslo National Academy of the Arts (ma).
